On Thursday in parliament I held a debate in Westminster Hall about sentencing for abuse of domestic pets. I also discussed the issue with Jacqui Cuff from the Cats Protection League (pictured).
This stems from local incidents, across a number of villages in my constituency, where we have seen domestic pets poisoned with antifreeze products, especially cats.
When you consider that the maximum sentence in Australia for animal cruelty is 5 years, it seems that we are far too lenient. Most of the time people in the UK get away with non-custodial sentences for crimes that cause a great deal of pain both to animals and their owners.
